The global economy will need to go green. What does that really mean? Will old concepts of sustainability endure? Where will forest products fit and who will profit? Join Avrim Lazar as he looks into our future. He’ll speak to how the global forest products industry is moving to become a major player in the developing bio-economy, through extracting more value out of the tree as bio-fuels, bio-chemicals, and bio-materials. Given these new product innovations, the best uses and value of wood become critical discussion points in the ongoing sustainability conversations. Existing and expanding competing interests for wood, require in-depth assessments across the economic, social, and environmental landscapes. In early 2010, FPAC, along with several Canadian partners, released the first phase of the Forest Biopathways study. This initial release examined the economic, social and environmental benefits of integrating new bio-technologies within the traditional forest products industry and it considered how this approach will boost employment and strengthen Canada's economy and rural communities. Canada has unique infrastructure and resources, but the learnings gained from this work can be extended globally.
