Organized by TAPPI's PIMA Division, these sessions are filled with roundtables and panel discussions with industry leaders, including mill managers, superintendents, and CEOs. The program offers an operations management focus with and emphasis on growing future leaders at your mill.

Monday, April 23

M2 - Executive Panel Discussion

Learn directly from Industry CEOs as they share their perspectives on the paper industry’s situation. Scheduled to speak:

James Rubright – Chairman and CEO, RockTenn
Since Mr. Rubright became CEO in 1999, RockTenn has undergone a transformation making it the most profitable company in the industry as measured by return on sales. In 2011, RockTenn acquired Smurfit-Stone Container, the second largest producer of containerboard and corrugated packaging in North America. The acquisition tripled RockTenn’s size to approximately $10 billion in revenues. In 2009 Rubright was named the first ever Global CEO of the Year for the forest products industry by RISI and Executive Papermaker of the Year by PaperAge. In 2008 and again in 2011, RISI named him North American CEO of the Year.

Dan Cappell - President and CEO, AstenJohnson
A thirty year veteran of the pulp and paper industry, Dan Cappell joined Asten, Inc. in 1984. In October 1997, Dan was promoted to Chief Operating Officer and was a principle in the planning and execution of the merger between Asten and JWI in late 1999. In May 2005, Dan was named President and Chief Operating Officer of AstenJohnson. In October 2006, he was appointed President and CEO of the company.

M3 - Future Products for the Pulp and Paper Industry
Session Chair: Harry Seamans, Bioenergy Deployment Consortium

This kick-off session will relate how the industry can improve its revenue generating production by adding value to mill streams that have traditionally been waste streams or low value streams. These future products are within the grasp of commercialization and include diesel or jet fuels and value added products from forest residues and bark, value added chemicals from the cellulosic portions of mill sludge, and the separation of lignin from black liquor in order to reduce load on recovery limited mills and to produce value added chemicals from the lignin. M4 - Procurement and Sourcing Forum

New to PaperCon! Designed specifically for sourcing and procurement professionals, these two sessions will address best practices in the procurement of materials and services in the manufacturer of paper and packaging materials.

M5 – It’s Never Too Early - or - Too Late to Become a Safety Leader (YP)

Caring and committed leadership in safety doesn't mean you are soft! Though our fundamental approach to great production, low cost, high reliability is the same to achieve safety excellence, the focus on safety should be much more than a priority...it must be a core value! The session will hit on challenges ‘new’ leaders have in trying to engage employees to work as a team towards injury free. You will also hear from a leader with long term sustained injury free results and how these results were achieved. In conclusion the session will close on how all leaders in an organization work together with an understanding of the fundamentals of being a caring and committed leader in safety.



M6 - Growing Your People (YP)
Session Chair: Keith Kemp, AstenJohnson

High levels of retirement have created two significant challenges in the workforce, skills gaps and engagement issues. The best performing operations address both. In this session, leaders from best in class companies including paper mills will present experiences and challenges.

M7 – Superintendent’s Roundtable (YP)
Session Chairs: Jeff Levensailor, Domtar; Paul Fredrickson, AstenJohnson

Seasoned mill supervisors and recently hired supervisors will share their wisdom, insights and best practices on performance improvements through rebuilds, getting the most out of limited budgets, managing economic downtime and much more.

Peter Frandina – Accenture

Mr. Frandina is Partner in Accenture’s Resources Strategy practice and the North American Forest Products Practice Lead. He has extensive client experience across global industry leaders. His expertise includes manufacturing and supply chain strategy, inventory and materials management, maintenance effectiveness, and operational process improvement. Mr. Frandina has been published in leading industry journals including Pulp & Paper, Paper 360°, PPI and TAPPI periodicals.

Jimmy Lu – PacificNet Holding

Mr. Lu is & CEO of PacificNet Holding Corporation - parent of www.chinapaperonline.com with headquarters in New Jersey and has its main office in Beijing China. He is a recognized expert on the Chinese pulp and paper industry and will discuss its rapid growth and impact on North America and other regions. He is the former president of UniAm (Chinapack’s US subsidiary) and has over 20 years experience in pulp & paper industry, plus 10 years service at China’s Ministry of Foreign Trade and Chinese embassy overseas.
